Sandwich Harbour Namibia: Complete 4×4 Guide (Route, Costs & Tips)
We hand the wheel to guest bloggers Jasper and Irene of Buiten de Bubbel. One of the most famous 4×4 routes in the world can be found in Namibia: the off-road track from Walvis Bay to Sandwich Harbour, where you drive between the 100-metre-high dunes of the Namib Desert and the rough waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Approximately 40 kilometres one-way and 40 kilometres back across the beach and through the dunes, where just one wrong move can cost you your car. In this blog we’ll tell you everything about this legendary 4×4 route to Sandwich Harbour; where and how you can book it, how to find a good guide, how to drive the route yourself with your own car, with a tour or with a rental car and what the prices are. Or in other words: everything you need to know before you drive this legendary track!

Practical information about the Sandwich Harbour 4×4 track:
💡 Sandwich Harbour itself is a lagoon, about 80 km south of Walvis Bay. Contrary to popular belief, it is not the name of the 4×4 route that runs like a “sandwich” between the ocean and the dunes.
💡 This 4×4 route to Sandwich Harbour along the sea is about 40 km across the beach, the last part of which is squeezed between high dunes and the ocean. These dunes are up to 100 m high in some places and there are few places where you can escape the waves with your car.
💡 The route is only passable for a few hours a day, at low tide. The narrowest (and most dangerous) part takes about an hour back and forth. However, it is not always possible at low tide, as weather conditions and wind directions have a major impact on whether it is possible or not.
💡 It is not only the tide that plays a role. The beach sometimes has treacherous areas that appear dry, but where seawater collects under the sand. If you get stuck here, you have a big problem.
💡 In addition to the 4×4 route, you will also see all kinds of wildlife along the way. Rare birds, hundreds of flamingos and pelicans, jackals, sea lions, whales and springboks may all pass by.

Our Sandwich Harbour experience (with our own car and a guide)
We ultimately decide to book a self-drive tour to Sandwich Harbour, where you follow a guide in your own car. We booked a tour with Lance’s Misty Shores, based in Walvis Bay. You can find more information on the website, or you can contact Lance directly via WhatsApp: +264814174062. Lance offers a special price for overlanders who have driven to Namibia in their own car.

Self-drive from Walvis Bay to Sandwich Harbour with a tour
Jasper and I are in our own Land Cruiser 4×4, our friends are divided between their own rental car and two extra cars hired directly from Misty Shores. This way, all the men can drive themselves. Lance and his colleague are leading the way in their own car. Lance equips each car with a walkie-talkie so that we can communicate properly at all times. The Misty Shores tour starts at around 9 a.m. First, you practise driving in the dunes, then Lance gives instructions for the rest of the day and you set off for the beach. The beach starts off stretched out, but soon becomes narrower and the dunes come closer. The last part became so narrow that we had to drive through the waves. On this part, we encounter a rabid sea lion and a washed-up whale: the adventure has begun!
At the end of the narrow part, we park the cars at Sandwich Harbour lagoon. We then all get into Lance’s car. He drives us to the highest dune, which offers an incredible view of the dunes, the sea and the lagoon. We are even lucky enough to spot whale!

As the tide is coming in, we need to hurry and run back down the dunes to our cars. Unfortunately, once we get down, we discover that our friends’ rental car has a flat tyre… Big problem. The narrow strip between the sea and the dunes is shrinking before our eyes and time is running out! The men change the wheel in record time, while I try to suppress my tension with a Windhoek beer and a vape (I never smoke). On the way back, we drive through the waves and are pushed sideways against the dunes. Fortunately, Lance finds an opening in the dunes in time and we dash inland. We spend the last hour of the tour driving through the enormous dunes. This was our friends’ first time dune driving and they loved it. We have already experienced it in Morocco and Mauritania, but it remains a magical feeling. What an experience!
Before we leave the desert, Lance treats us to a buffet with bubbles, and we toast to a successful ending of the tour. He teaches us about the special sand and salt extraction in the area and the pink lakes with algae before taking us to the best car wash in town. That is much needed after all that ocean salt hitting the car. At 2 p.m., we drive back to Swakopmund, satisfied and with a clean car.
Don’t want to take your own car or not allowed to go off-road with your rental car? There is also an option to simply join Lance in his car from the start. He will drive and you can enjoy the views and adrenaline rush as a passenger. Another option is to rent a car from Lance and drive yourself. Lance will then lead the way in his own car.

Permit for Sandwich Harbour
Don’t want a guide? In that case, you can obtain a permit for the National Park yourself and try it on your own, but we definitely do not recommend this. These permits can be purchased from the Ministry of Environment & Tourism. Here you will find the address of their office in Swakopmund as well.

Prices for a 4×4 tour to Sandwich Harbour
These prices below were for our tour, in September 2025.
With our own (rental) car:
- 2250 N$ pp (approximately 118 euros)
- 1850 N$ pp (approximately 97 euros), a discount especially for overlanders.
Including rental car from Misty Shores:
- 5000 N$ pp (2250 tour + 2750 car) (approximately 260 euros)
The costs do not change with the number of cars and is always based on the number of people. Are there 5 people in 1 car or 5 people spread over 5 private (rental) cars? Then the price remains the same. Of course, the price does change when you rent a car from Misty Shores.

Important checklist before setting off to Sandwich Harbour:
- Planning to take your rental car? Carefully check the terms and conditions of your rental company beforehand. In some cases, the terms and conditions state that you are NOT allowed to drive this route with a rental car.
- Make sure you have 1 or preferably 2 spare tyres. When you deflate your tyres to drive through the dunes, there is also a greater chance of a flat tyre.
- Are you going without a guide? Make sure you have a means of communication, such as a satellite phone or Garmin Inreach, or drive in convoy with other cars.
