5 Ways To Cure Your Wanderlust While Staying At Home
Wanderlust. Or, in other words, a strong desire to travel the world. Now that we have to stay at home and borders are closed, how do we cure that restless feeling of the urge to travel? In this post I share five of my best practices to cure your wanderlust.

Create photo books
You take so many amazing photos during your trip, only for them to disappear on your hard drive afterwards. That’s such a shame. Instead, create photo books of your trips to relive your memories. I made photo books for all my trips and show them to whoever is interested. Actually, also to those who aren’t interested. Sorry friends and family. Anyway, it’s loads of fun to have a look at your old photos when making a photo book. Who knows what you might find. Fun times guaranteed! If you have a lot of videos it’s also possible to make a travel movie instead of a photo book. Check out my travel videos at my YouTube channel if you want some inspiration.
Watch travel videos, series and movies
Reminiscing your last holiday or planning a new trip? Look up amazing travel videos on YouTube about your favorite destination. Or instead feeling the travel itch but you’re not sure where you’re heading next? Why not watch some amazing series or movies about traveling? Here’s a list to give you some ideas for travel movies and series out there (but of course there are many more):
- A Map For Saturday (Documentary, trailer above)
- Pedal The World (Documentary)
- Into The Wild (Movie)
- Wild (Movie)
- The Beach (Movie)
- The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Movie)
- The Bucket List (Movie)
- Lost In Translation (Movie)
- Under The Tuscan Sun (Movie)
- Midnight in Paris (Movie)
- The Way (Movie)
- Eat Pray Love (Movie)
- Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (Series)
- Dark Tourist (Series)
- An Idiot Abroad (Series)
- Tales by Light (Series)
Read travel books and blogs
Get comfy, grab a book and dive into a world of travel by reading. Some of my recommendations are:
- Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel by Rolf Potts. Also read my post about this must read travel book!
- Ten Years A Nomad by Matt Kepnes
- Wild by Cheryl Strayed
- On The Road by Jack Kerouac
- The Beach by Alex Garland
- The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
- In A Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson
Or instead of a book, try some of the amazing travel blogs out there for the most beautiful destinations around the world. A few of my favorites are:
- Nomadic Matt (Budget travel)
- The Blonde Abroad (Travel and lifestyle)
- Be My Travel Muse (Solo female travel)
- Uncornered Market (Sustainable travel)
Plan a trip
Planning a trip while borders are closed and countries are in lockdown? Seems a bit strange, but all things come to an end. And when we can travel again, you have your trip ready and waiting. So start by looking at potential travel destinations and check out what you would like to do there. Do you picture yourself there already? Planning is half the fun, right?
Decorate your house with travel details
Integrating your travels in your home decor is not too hard. And the fun part is that you’re always surrounded by your best travel memories and adventures. For instance, I printed my travel photos and put them on the wall in the living room. I also put my photo books and souvenirs on display on shelves and in a bookcase in the living room. And I have loads of travel themed items, such as world maps and globes in my house. So to summarize, start by implementing these tips to make your home travel proof:
- Print your travel photos and display them around the house on walls and in frames.
- Put your photo books and travel souvenirs on display on shelves or in (book)cases.
- Use items in your house with a travel theme, such as maps, globes and suitcases.
Obviously I know the gravity of the current situation worldwide, but enough has been said about that already. I’m waiting for better times in which we can travel again. Hopefully, for now at least, these ideas help a little bit with your wanderlust.
