Over een paar weken rijden we naar Oekra\u00efne. We gaan mee met een hulpkonvooi om 4x4's en generatoren te brengen naar mensen die ze hard nodig hebben. En eerlijk gezegd vind ik dat best spannend. Ik vraag me af hoe het zal zijn om voor het eerst een luchtalarm te horen. Om ergens te moeten schuilen. Om naar de lucht te kijken en je af te vragen of dat gezoem van een vliegtuig komt, een drone of misschien wel iets veel ergers. Hoe het voelt om ergens te zijn waar je veiligheid nooit helemaal zeker is. En wat het met me zal doen om met eigen ogen een land in oorlog te zien. Welke mensen we ontmoeten, welke verhalen we horen en hoe ik die straks weer een plek geef als we thuis zijn in Nederland. Misschien maak ik het in mijn hoofd groter dan het is. We gaan tenslotte maar een week, als vrijwillige chauffeurs, richting Kyiv. Maar het blijft een land in oorlog. En het zou na\u00efef zijn om te doen alsof daar geen risico's aan zitten. Dus waarom gaan we?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wat doen we met onze vrijheid?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Marcel en ik hebben jarenlang gebouwd aan een leven waarin vrijheid centraal staat. We zijn zelfstandig ondernemer, kunnen remote werken en reisden anderhalf jaar met onze Toyota 4Runner de wereld rond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het is een leven vol privilege. Maar de laatste tijd denken we steeds vaker na over wat we eigenlijk met al die vrijheid doen. Want op minder dan drie dagen rijden van ons huis vechten mensen voor hun vrijheid (en die van ons!) aan het front van Europa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mensen die afscheid moeten nemen van hun familie zonder te weten of ze elkaar ooit nog terugzien. Die in ijskoude loopgraven slapen terwijl drones boven hun hoofden cirkelen. Die vrienden hebben zien sterven, hun huis zijn kwijtgeraakt of al jaren wachten op de terugkeer van iemand van wie ze houden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En dan denk ik na over waar we de winter zullen doorbrengen. Ja, tuurlijk mag je genieten van het leven dat je hebt opgebouwd. Maar ik vraag me wel af of we onze vrijheid ook kunnen gebruiken om iets voor anderen te betekenen. Waar zetten we onze vrijheid voor in?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toen we hoorden dat de Nederlandse stichting Vrienden van Oekra\u00efne<\/a> vrijwillige chauffeurs zocht, werd die vraag ineens heel concreet. We weten hoe je lange afstanden rijdt in een 4x4. We hebben ervaring met grensovergangen en reizen door onbekende landen. En we hebben de flexibiliteit en de tijd. Dus meldden we ons aan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vrienden van Oekra\u00efne<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In november rijden we voor het eerst mee met een hulpkonvooi richting Kyiv. We brengen 4x4's, generatoren en andere hulpgoederen die door Vrienden van Oekra\u00efne zijn ingezameld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oekra\u00efne bereidt zich voor op alweer een winter in oorlog. De temperaturen kunnen er ver onder het vriespunt zakken en doordat de energie-infrastructuur voortdurend wordt aangevallen, zijn elektriciteit en verwarming lang niet altijd beschikbaar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Generatoren en powerstations zorgen ervoor dat communicatieapparatuur en andere essenti\u00eble apparaten blijven werken. Dieselkachels bieden warmte op plekken waar gewone verwarming ontbreekt. En 4x4's worden gebruikt om mensen en goederen te vervoeren over kapotte wegen en moeilijk begaanbaar terrein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afgelopen winter haalde de stichting ruim \u20ac500.000 op en leverde daarmee 1.087 generatoren, 276 powerstations en 14 heaters aan Oekra\u00efne. Dit jaar wil de stichting met de winteractie Geef energie, geef warmte <\/em> maar liefst 1.000 generatoren, 1.000 powerstations en 1.000 dieselkachels leveren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wat ik me nauwelijks kan voorstellen<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

De laatste tijd lees ik steeds meer verhalen over Oekra\u00efne. Een aanrader is 'Ordinary People Don't Carry Machine Guns' van de Oekra\u00efense schrijver Artem Chapeye. Een boek over de oorlog waarin de menselijke kant centraal staat. Wat het met je leven doet, als er ineens oorlog uitbreekt. Voor welke keuzes je komt te staan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ik blijf me afvragen wat het met iemand doet als je iedere dag rekening moet houden met een mogelijke aanval. Of je op een gegeven moment niet meer reageert op een luchtalarm. Of je 's nachts nog wel kunt doorslapen. Of angst iets wordt wat je gewoon met je meedraagt terwijl je boodschappen doet, naar je werk gaat of staat te koken. De mensen in Oekra\u00efne hebben niet kunnen kiezen of deze oorlog onderdeel van hun leven zou worden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ik ben ook benieuwd naar de mensen die we zullen ontmoeten. Wat ze ons willen vertellen. Hun verhalen over de afgelopen jaren. Ik kan me nauwelijks voorstellen wat ze allemaal hebben meegemaakt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naast ons werk als vrijwillige chauffeurs zijn we een inzamelingsactie gestart om Vrienden van Oekra\u00efne te helpen meer 4x4's, generatoren, dieselkachels en andere hulpgoederen aan te schaffen. Hoe meer geld we samen ophalen, hoe meer hulpgoederen de stichting komende winter naar Oekra\u00efne kan brengen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De initiatiefnemers van de stichting betalen alle organisatiekosten zelf en wij bekostigen onze eigen reis. Dat betekent dat 100% van de donaties naar hulpgoederen voor Oekra\u00efne gaat.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ik hoop dat de mensen die aan het front onze vrijheid verdedigen, weten dat er honderden kilometers verderop mensen zijn die hen niet zijn vergeten. Juist nu, na bijna vijf jaar oorlog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoe deze reis precies gaat verlopen, weten we nog niet. En hoe we ons zullen voelen als we straks de Oekra\u00efense grens weer over rijden richting Nederland, al helemaal niet. Maar ik vermoed dat die grensovergang anders zal voelen dan alle andere grenzen die we tot nu zijn overgestoken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a few weeks, we will be driving to Ukraine. We’re joining a humanitarian aid convoy to deliver 4×4 vehicles and essential supplies to people who need them. I wonder what it will be like… to hear an air raid siren for the first time. To have to find shelter. To look up at the sky and wonder whether the sound overhead is a plane, a drone, or something far worse. I wonder how it feels to be in a country where safety isn’t guaranteed. And what it will do to me to see a country at war with my own eyes. What stories we’ll hear, who we’ll meet, and how I’ll make sense of it all. Perhaps a little dramatic, considering we’re only going towards Kyiv for about a week as volunteer drivers. But Ukraine is ultimately a country at war, and we’d be foolish to pretend there’s no risk involved. So why are we going? What do we do with our freedom? For years, Marcel and I have been building a life revolving around freedom. We became entrepreneurs, started working remotely, and spent a year and a half traveling around the world in our Toyota 4Runner driving from the Netherlands to Singapore. It’s a priviliged life. And lately, we’ve been thinking a lot about what we actually do with all that freedom. Because less than three days’ drive from our home, people are fighting for theirs (and ours!). People who have to say goodbye to their families without knowing whether they’ll see them again. Who sleep in freezing trenches while drones circle overhead. Who have watched friends die, lost their homes, or spent years waiting for someone they love to come back. And here I am, thinking about where we’ll spend the winter. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with enjoying the life we’ve created. But I do wonder whether we could use our freedom for something beyond ourselves. When we heard that the Dutch foundation Friends of Ukraine was looking for volunteer drivers, that question suddenly became very practical. We know how to drive long distances in a 4×4. We have experience crossing borders and traveling through unfamiliar countries. And we have the flexibility and time. So we signed up. Friends of Ukraine In November, we’ll join our first humanitarian aid convoy heading towards Kyiv. We’ll be delivering 4×4 vehicles, generators, and other essential supplies collected by Friends of Ukraine. Ukraine is preparing for another winter of war. With temperatures dropping well below freezing and energy infrastructure repeatedly targeted, reliable electricity and heating can be difficult to come by. Generators and power stations keep communication equipment and other essential devices running. Diesel heaters provide warmth where ordinary heating isn’t available. And 4×4 vehicles help transport people and supplies across damaged roads and difficult terrain. Last winter, the foundation raised over \u20ac500,000 and delivered 1,087 generators, 276 power stations, and 14 heaters to Ukraine. This year, its Give Energy, Give Warmth campaign aims to provide 1,000 generators, 1,000 power stations, and 1,000 diesel heaters. The things I can’t quite imagine I’ve been reading more stories about Ukraine lately. Some of them stay with me long after I’ve finished reading. I recommend ‘Ordinary People Don’t Carry Machine Guns’ by the Ukranian writer Artem Chapeye. A book about the war in which the human side of things doesn’t get lost. About what it does to you when you suddenly find yourself in a country at war. What kind of life choices you’ll have to make. I keep wondering what it does to a person to live with the possibility of an attack every day. Whether you eventually stop reacting to the air raid alerts. Whether you can still sleep through the night. Whether fear or resilience becomes something you learn to carry around while buying groceries, going to work, or making dinner. The people in Ukraine haven’t had the luxury of choosing whether this war becomes part of their lives. I’m also curious about the people we’ll meet. Their stories about the last few years. I can\u2019t even imagine what they must\u2019ve been through. Will you help us bring warmth to Ukraine? Alongside volunteering as drivers, we’ve started a fundraiser to help Friends of Ukraine purchase more 4×4 vehicles, generators, diesel heaters, and other supplies. The more money we raise, the more equipment the foundation can send to Ukraine before and during the winter. The foundation’s initiators cover their own organizational costs, and we pay our own travel expenses. That means 100% of the donations goes towards aid supplies for Ukraine. Or how we’ll feel driving back across the Ukrainian border, towards a country where an air raid siren is something we only hear on the news. But I imagine that crossing will feel different from all the borders we’ve crossed before.
