De mensen zijn opvallend vriendelijk en heten je van harte welkom in dit deel van Frankrijk. Veel toeristen bezoeken Normandi\u00eb vanwege de D-Day plekken. De witte krijtrotsen van deze kustplaats rijzen op uit de Atlantische Oceaan en zijn meer dan 100 meter hoog. Spendeer wat tijd op het mooie kiezelstrand en wandel vervolgens omhoog langs de kliffen aan beide zijden van het strand. Vanaf daar heb je een prachtig uitzicht op de beroemde natuurlijke rotsen en de oceaan. Bij vloed wordt de ommuurde stad volledig omringd door de zee. Daarom wordt het vaak een eiland genoemd. Maar bij eb zijn er alleen zandbanken en is het mogelijk om over het verraderlijke drijfzand te lopen. De stad zelf ziet eruit als een plek uit een sprookje. Middeleeuwse geplaveide straatjes, oude huizen en een enorme abdij. Het is er vaak overvol met toeristen, omdat een van de absolute hoogtepunten van Frankrijk is. Aan bezienswaardigheden geen gebrek in deze boeiende stad. Rouen staat vooral bekend om zijn oude vakwerkhuizen, de verfijnde renaissanceklok du Gros Horloge en de indrukwekkende Notre-Dame. Kleurrijke vakwerkhuizen staan langs de geplaveide straten en authentieke winkeltjes. Er zijn een paar interessante kerken en het is een geweldige plek om verse vis te eten. Voor velen is de geschiedenis zelfs het belangrijkste doel van hun bezoek. Ze willen de gebeurtenissen die hier in 1944 plaatsvonden begrijpen of herinneren. D-Day, de dag van de geallieerde invasie in Europa tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Er zijn heel veel plaatsen die je kunt bezoeken. Ik noem de 9 meest essenti\u00eble in <a href=\"https:\/\/charisfar.com\/nl\/world-war-ii-sites-normandy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deze route<\/a>. En hier zijn ook een paar niet-te-missen hoogtepunten met betrekking tot D-Day:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Arromanches:<\/strong> een kunstmatige haven gecre\u00eberd door de geallieerden.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Overlord Museum:<\/strong> Dit museum vertelt het verhaal van de geallieerde landing en de reis naar Parijs die daarop volgde. Het heeft ook een uitzonderlijke collectie van militaire uitrusting en voertuigen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Landingsstranden:<\/strong> Hoewel de stranden meestal gewoon stranden zijn, is het toch bijzonder om deze plekken te bezoeken. Utah beach is een breed stuk goudkleurig zand en bij Omaha vind je een aantal monumenten. De andere stranden zijn Sword beach, Juno beach en Gold beach.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pointe-du-Hoc:<\/strong> Gelegen op een klif met uitzicht op zowel Utah als Omaha Beach, was dit een tactische en belangrijke plek voor de Duitsers tijdens de geallieerde invasie. Tegenwoordig zijn er overblijfselen van bunkers en veel gaten als gevolg van de zware bombardementen die deze plek te verduren heeft gehad. Het verhaal van Pointe-du-Hoc is indrukwekkend, met Rangers die zich een weg naar boven vochten om de kliffen te veroveren en zware verliezen leden.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Longues-sur-Mer batterij:<\/strong> een van de best bewaarde geschutsbatterijen in Frankrijk met originele kanonnen. Het was strategisch gelegen om de geallieerde invasie op D-Day tegen te houden.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Amerikaanse en Duitse begraafplaatsen:<\/strong> De meeste toeristen bezoeken de Amerikaanse begraafplaats met duizenden geallieerde graven op de grasvelden bij Omaha Beach. De begraafplaats is goed onderhouden en het voelt bijzonder om je respect te betuigen aan de soldaten die voor onze vrijheid hebben gevochten. Niet al te ver weg ligt een Duitse begraafplaats. Hoewel deze minder wordt bezocht en een heel ander verhaal vertelt, waren de meeste van deze soldaten nog geen achttien jaar oud, zoals je op hun grafstenen kunt lezen. But during low tide there are merely sandbanks and it\u2019s possible to walk on the treacherous quicksand. The city itself looks like something out of a fairytale. Medieval cobblestoned streets, old houses and a huge abbey. It\u2019s often overcrowded with tourists, because it\u2019s considered one of the absolute highlights of France. Best to go early to enjoy this wonderful place. Rouen The vibrant capital of Normandy, Rouen, is definitely worth a visit. There is no shortage of sights in this captivating city. Rouen is mostly known for its old half-timbered houses, the stunning Renaissance clock du Gros Horloge and the magnificent Notre-Dame. Catch the last rays of sunshine at the Old Market\u2019s Square to end your day.&nbsp; Honfleur Honfleur is the most picturesque port town in Normandy. Colorful half-timbered houses line the cobblestoned streets and authentic shops. There are some interesting churches and it\u2019s a great place to eat some fresh seafood. Don\u2019t miss the Vieux Bassin, the heart of the port and the town, and walk around the small streets to take in Honfleur\u2019s charm. World War II sites Normandy is a place of history. For many, history is the sole purpose of their visit. They want to understand or remember the events that happened here in 1944. D-Day, the day of the Allied invasion of Europe during the Second World War. There are loads of places that you can visit. I mention the 9 most essential ones in this blog. And here&#8217;s also a few not-to-miss highlights related to D-Day: Where to stay I stayed at the charming campsite Ch\u00e2teau de Martragny in the garden of a castle. It&#8217;s located in the southern part of Normandy, very close to the village of Bayeux and the landing beaches. For me it was the ideal base to explore the region, so I really recommend this place.
